On December 12, 2000, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, located in the eponymous city of Ukraine, was decommissioned. The plant went down in history because of the serious nuclear accident on April 26, 1986. An explosion and a fire threw huge amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread through much of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). ) and western Europe. In the accident, 31 people died, but it was not yet possible to establish the number of victims due to the consequences of the accident, which can cause cancer and congenital malformations due to radiation. Between the date of the accident and May 5, around 130,000 people were evacuated from the area around the plant. The Chernobyl Plant began construction in the 1970s and its first reactor was inaugurated in 1977. Two other reactors were commissioned in 1981 and 1983, respectively. Watch documentary
